For people who attended Crawford High School or would have attended if they hadn't
moved -- or just have fond memories of San Diego in the '40s, '50s and '60s.

December 5, 2025

This was supposed to be a Crawford Beanie, included in a box of Colt goodies sent to me by Dietra Davis some time ago.  It was only after I had one of the girls here pop it on my head and take a picture that I realized it says "John" and not "Colts".  That's a puzzlement.  I met Dietra for the first time at our 30th Reunion (I think).

We had Sweet and Sour Pork at the Old Folks' Home yesterday and I felt obligated to read my fortune to my unfortunate seat mate Trella -- adding "in bed" at the end, of course.  These things are amazingly accurate.  Feel free to use those numbers on your lottery ticket.

I saw this on Facebook.  I can never think of Sheng How Low without it reminding me of my Grandma Lomicka, who wanted to go there one Thanksgiving.  "Do you think we'll need reservations?" she asked.  This was well before the dog ate the turkey in "A Christmas Story".  Fa-ra-ra-ra-ra.

As God is my witness, I came across this Neil Morgan snippet from October 21, 1971 last night after I had put this column "to bed".

And this came even later.  Logan Byrnes retired yesterday from KUSI.  Did you know he was the son of Edd Byrnes -- "Kookie Kookie, lend me your comb" on 77 Sunset Strip.  Oh, God -- how many Colts are too young to know what I'm talking about.

Well, at least they both got a school named after them.  Standley Middle School is in University City I believe.  (from the April 29, 1948 San Diego Union)

This photo of the Oscar's at Midway and Rosecrans popped up recently on Facebook.  As good a reason as any to revisit the Oscar's Page.  Click HERE.

It's impossible to get color and detail when you're shooting south into the sun, but I've added this photo to "The San Diegan" page anyway. Click HERE to take a look.  For those of you who haven't been in San Diego for a while, the sign and smokestacks in the background are gone -- San Diego Gas & Electric is now condos.
