"I was nowhere NEAR Oakland," to quote Woody Allen in Play It Again Sam. Actually, this took place in Northern Macedonia, but what can you expect from the Balkans?

Last week’s story about Jack-in-the-Box brought back memories of other favorite teen hangouts, notably Oscar’s Drive-In on El Cajon and Menlo and the “mystery” Carnation on El Cajon and 67th. It’s frustrating not to find photos of Oscar’s, but maddening to locate proof that Carnation even existed. My classmates and I spent many hours in there, listening to Moon River on the jukebox. On-line access to the City Directory stops in 1958 and there’s no mention of it then. Judy Lyle MacInnes says “I do recall Carnation lost their lease and it became a real estate office. We had to go to the one on El Cajon Blvd near 30th Street." Click HERE to see that Carnation, what’s there now, and what was there in olden times.

I don't know if I've shared this photo of lower Broadway before, but I've added a snippet from the 1958 City Directory to help you identify the businesses. Click HERE to check it out.
