Best 50 Prep Athletes

Three Colts made the Top 50 High School Athletes of the Last 50 Years, published in the October 9th Union-Tribune.  One was from the 1960s, one from the 1960s and 1970s, and one from the 1970s.   Click HERE when you get tired of guessing.

  1. I thought it would either be Bob Boone or Ed Hermann for the 60's.

  2. If they'd gone back 51 years they should have picked Arnold Tripp (Crawford '59). Elijah Jefferson is one of the Crawford kids on the list--he won the state CIF championship in 1973 and 1974 for the 100 yard dash. His time isn't given for '73 but he ran a 9.8 in '74. Tripp ran 9.6 several times, but not at the State or Southern Sectional (I presume he ran though). In 1959 he won the Southern Sectional in the 220 yard dash with a 20.5 (wind aided) and the long jump with 24' 9.0"--both incredible, worthy of putting him on an all-time list. When I left Oregon in 1969 he still held the freshman 100 yard dash record at Hayward Field, despite all the amazing track stars who ran there. He was on the UCLA team, if memory serves, but didn't compete after his freshman year because of mononucleosis.

  3. Update: I've looked up some more information and see that Arnold Tripp was the 1962 Pac 8 Champion in the 100 (9.6) and 220 (21.0), and he did run for UCLA and he did run after his freshman year.
