IT'S GETTING LIGHT in Pacific Beach and I'm expecting another beautiful day.  Nancy and I will no doubt end up at the Waffle Spot and perhaps take a drive and see the sights.  With Nancy in the car it's sort of a cross between the Old Town tourist trolley and The Twilight Zone.  "On your left used to be Woolworth's where I had my first Tuna Melt at the lunch counter.  On the right is the old California Theater.  In 1955 I saw a double bill with John Hodiak and Ina Mae Hutton.  I missed part of the second movie because I was in the bathroom trying to get an Abba Zaba unstuck from my skirt."

The Good News is that Crawford Soccer coach Kyle Hagenberger has 80 kids eager to start the season.  The Bad News is there is no money for cleats, shin-guards, matching uniforms and transportation.  Kyle has set up a gofundme account that has already raised $440 of the $2000 he needs.   Click HERE to get more information and/or contribute.

"Oh, to see ourselves as others see us."  Quite a number of you — including Nancy — thought my 1946 Halloween costume had something to do with the KKK.  I’m sticking with Little Red Riding Hood meets the Lone Ranger.

Sharon Cramer Sceper ‘68 shares a Land of Oden/Bifrost Bridge flier kept by her husband Duane, whose band one played there.  Dave Gray ‘63 says he used to manage Land of Oden.  Click HERE to check out the flier and recollections.

Sandra Slad Sladkey ‘68 (yes, that’s really her name) has a story in the latest Chicken Soup for the Soul book entitled Find Your Inner Strength.  She would love to sell you one for $12 plus shipping.  All monies go to the Missions Fund at Hillside Church in Julian.  They support a village in Cambodia and a school in Africa.  Contact Sandra at Sandra@sozsystems.com

Carla Hilger Medlock ‘68 wondered if I had photos of Ozzie’s Marching Chargers at Balboa Stadium in 1967.  A quick Google search turned up a video of Ozzie’s Marching Charger Band at the 1964 Aquafair Parade as well as a Facebook page of Ozzie’s Alumni that can be viewed as a slide show.  I don't know if this will help Carla, but they're fun to look at. Click HERE to go to the Ozzie's Page.

John Blackwood ‘59 has shared his Ed Schlehuber Builder Colt League Team photo.  Click HERE to see the 8 x 10 version.

Theresa Sousa Davis Thompson ‘65 passed away October 13, 2014.  Click HERE to sign an on-line guest book.

IT’'S GETTING LIGHT IN PACIFIC BEACH and Nancy’s staying in Escondido so she doesn’t have to make two trips down.  We’re taking her autistic daughter Lisa to the Amigo Spot tonight for Halloween dinner.

If you’re in the area you might want to stop by Crawford for the 3:30 PM game.  Mountain Empire will be the Colts’ opponents for the last homecoming game on the old practice field.

Here’s a shot of me in 1946 when we lived in Navy Housing in Long Beach.  I’m not sure if I’m the Ghost of the Lone Ranger or — horrors — Little Red Riding Hood.  I can almost hear the sound of my mother's sewing machine.

If you’re going to San Francisco be sure to wear some flowers in your hair — and stop by the Chicken Pie Shop on your way out of town.    Patti Frazier ‘61, who actually lives in Menlo Park, is having dreamy thoughts about the Chicken Pie Shop.  She really asked me if they ship pies, but I thought that was unlikely.  Perhaps I’m wrong.  Contact Patti at Frazy@aol.com

Mike Fry is pretty sure he knows where the Adare McAllister Black Mountain photos were taken — and you won’t believe what Owen Western did with the photos.  Spoiler alert!!  He put them together into one panoramic shot.  Click HERE to enjoy both Colts’ input.

I’ve saved some of your memories of The Day It Snowed in San Diego to the Memories Page.  You can access it HERE or on my Crawford High web site.

Here’s the cover of the Crawford vs La Jolla football program from October 29, 1959 — 55 years ago.  Click HERE to read the rest of the program.

Here’s an ad from the October 29, 1964 Golden Anniversary Pacer.  I also got a kick out of the Land of Oden ad.  Click HERE to check out all four pages.

Diana Loss Dwyer sends word of the passing of her good friend and classmate Marilyn Soden Werdick ‘65.  Marilyn is survived by her husband and high school sweetheart Greg Werdick ‘65.

I think Steve Jones wanted me to take Ed Furlow ‘68 off the Missing List.  He says “Big Ed” passed away in 1994.

Dang -- That was fast!!  Another month has passed and First Thursday at the Amigo Spot is just days away.  You can show up at 6PM, but half the early birds will be finishing dinner.  That’s Thursday, November 5th at the Amigo Spot, King’s Inn, Hotel Circle South, Mission Valley, San Diego, California

IT’S PICTCH-BLACK AND COOL in Pacific Beach.  I’m pretty sure I’ve got nothing to do today — and all day to do it.

I spent two nights at the King’s Inn last week while my house was being fumigated.  Guess who else was staying at the hotel?

John Yeager ‘63 and Patrick Dewey ‘73 have subscribed to the quarterly, 12-page alumni newsletter.  Thanks guys.

Click HERE to check out the KCBQ Top 40 List for October 24, 1965.  Gee, that’s almost 50 years ago, and the Rolling Stones had the #1 Hit.

I’ve posted a couple of photos Adare McAllister took on Black Mountain Road in April 1966.  Perhaps you can help me figure out where it would be today.  Click HERE to check them out.

I recently came across a Facebook video entitled The Day It Snowed in San Diego.  The person who posted it didn’t know the address, but noted the Chollas tower in the background.  I found the video on YouTube and learned that the address was 3415 Rowe Street, which is just off Streamview, near College.  Click HERE to take a gander.  Maybe you’ll know the lady on the porch.

Here’s the Crawford Pacer for February 19, 1970, the final submission from Ed Schoenberg.  He also sends along an explanation for the missing articles in this, and two previous contributions.  Click HERE to read all about it.

THE TENT IS GONE and I’m back in my house after a 48-hour termite treatment from Terminix.  Hard to believe, but Terminix has SDG&E turn off your gas, but you’re on your own if you want it turned back on.  Grrrr.

Arnold Korey and Arnold Tripp are pictured at the Class of ‘59 get together on October 7th. Click HERE to check out a handful of additional photos.

Mary Ellen Whelan Clark and Susan Wilkerson McCasland are pictured at Mary Ellen’s “Cave” in southern France.  You can read all about it if you click HERE

Ruth Guichard, mother of Bill Guichard ‘63, passed away August 10, 2014.  She taught at Hardy, Montezuma and Horace Mann.

Larue Brown Kobrin ‘60 passed away September 22, 2014.  There is no on-line obituary or guest book.

NO “FRIED EGG”* Email NEXT WEEK!!
I’m having my house tented for termites

The cool thing about Facebook is that you get to see wonderful historic photos.  The bad thing is that you rarely learn who took them.  This photo appeared on a Pacific Beach site, with the note, “Serra Museum 1951”.  I contacted the fellow who posted the photo and asked him where he got the photo and who took it.  I’m still not sure where he found the shot, but he said It was submitted by Owen Western  who said,: "Here's an unusual view of Mission Valley shot by my father-in-law in 1951, looking from Presidio Park, northwest, past US Hwy 80".  Small world.  Owen is Class of ‘63 and his father-in-law was Bob Tuohy, with whom I worked at Washburn and Justice Advertising Agency.  Click HERE to see this photo blown up to 12 x 12 inches.

Here’s the cover of the Crawford vs Clairemont football game played at Hoover on October 9, 1959.  Click HERE to check out the lineups.  Sadly, you’ll see Joe Schreiner, whose obituary is below, listed as a 125 pound halfback.

Last week’s reference to Mission Trails Regional Park brought an email from my classmate Steve Haiman -- "alias George Cowles"  (Think Cowles Mountain).  Steve is an active trail guide at the park and will give you a personalized tour if you call him at 619-448-5713. Click HERE to send him an email.

Apparently no photos were taken at the Class of ‘64 50th Reunion, or at least none were forwarded to me.  I’ll share them if I get them.

The Crawford Alumni Association Newsletter says the Class of ‘65 Reunion Committee is hard at work.  They haven’t contacted me.  Call Reunion Specialists at 760-721-0525 for more information.  Click HERE to access their web site.

This ad, featuring Leslie McClure ‘70 as your Walker Scott gift counselor, is part of the December 18, 1969 Pacer donated by Ed Schoenberg.  I’m still not sure why there are missing articles.  Click HERE to read all 6 pages.

Patricia Naish Johnson ‘59, who taught school in Vista for many years, passed away July 13, 2014.  Click HERE to access a more complete obituary and on-line guest book.

Joe Schreiner ‘60 died June 14, 2014 at his home in Silverdale, Washington.  Click HERE to read about his years with the Yolo County Sheriff’s Department and comment via Facebook.

IT’S DARK AND COMFY IN PB — but the weatherman says record heat is coming today.  Nancy and I will drop off newsletter subscription envelopes for the Classes of ‘63 and ‘73 at the Midway Post Office, then head over to the Waffle Spot for a late breakfast.

The last homecoming to take place on the old football field will be held on Friday, October 31st, at 3:30 PM.  Susan Marshal Gordon says she needs convertibles for the parade.  Call her at 619-865-3410 or email smarshallgordon@gmail.com

Proud sister Cheryl Hembera Lang ‘62 wants you to know that brother Steve Hembera  ‘66 was recently inducted into the University of Idaho’s Athletic Hall of Fame.  That’s him on the big screen with other members of the 1969-1970 tennis team.  That's a Vandal's decal on Steve's cheek, by the way.

Remember the photo Adare Mcallister took of Mission Valley from the Serra Museum in March 1952?  I think he took this one at the same time.  It looks toward La Jolla with the railroad tracks, Morena Boulevard, and the old Cudahy Packing Plant in the foreground.  Click HERE to see a much larger version.

Linda Buss Donahue checks in from Seabeck, Washington.  She is now on the Class of ‘73 Email Page.

I couldn’t resist this ad for Farah pants in the October 1, 1964 Golden Anniversary Pacer. There’s also one for Frederick's of Hollywood.  Click HERE to read all four pages.

Gary Morris ‘61 shares word of the passing on September 4th of his classmate Frank Bucheit (above).  You can read Frank’s recollections, and sign an on-line guest book, on the Class of ‘61 Obituary Page.

Marlene Kolender Korey ‘59 will have two of her works on display at the Third Annual “Art in the Park” Fundraiser for the Mission Trails Park Foundation on Saturday, October 11th.  Hopefully you can read the details above.  Click HERE to go to the Mission Trails web site, and HERE to check out Marlene's web site.

The Grand Opening of the Emerald Gallery C in Coronado on October 3rd will feature the art work of Elaine Robinson Davis ’61.  She hopes you can attend the opening, because she won’t be able to.  She and Charles had previously booked a trip to Croatia, so there you go.  The address of the gallery is 1331 Orange Avenue and the party goes from 5 to 9 PM.  Take pictures (if it’s allowed)

Where were you 56 years ago tonight?  OK – tomorrow night!!  Horace Mann 9th grader Lynn Routt was at Hoover Stadium rooting for the Colts.  Actually I’m just assuming all of this.  Lynn was the one who loaned me the program from the game.  Click HERE to check out all four pages.

John McGuigan was in town for the ’64 Reunion and took his wife to Sushi Time on Federal Boulevard near College Avenue.  He got to thinking about a house and a grave site that once stood on a knoll near the intersection.  “There was always a large American flag flying there,” he recalled.  John asked if I knew anymore.  Oui -- but of course.  When I was a toddler in Spring Valley, we often drove by that site well before Highway 94 caused it to be relocated.  Polish Princess Filomena Wojciechowski Sledzinski was buried there.  Click HERE for "The Rest Of The Story".

Curses!!  I should have run this LAST week!!  It would have been 50 years to the day.  It’s the KDEO Top 40 for September 19, 1964.  Click HERE to see an enlarged version.

Ed Schoenberg sent me some Pacers a while back, three of which were not already posted.  I’ll share the October 17, 1969 issue today.  Click HERE to read all four pages.

Buddy Sharp ‘60 died September 5th at his home in Hermiston, Oregon.  He was a retired aircraft mechanic for PSA and, later, USAir.

Barbara Earley Powell ‘64 sends the sad news that her classmate Sharon Angus Piscopo, wife of Phil Piscopo ‘63, passed away May 22, 2014.  We believe more details will follow.

I have just learned of the passing, on October 10, 2010, of Joanne Lindsey Crispell ‘67.  At the time of her death she was survived by her mother Lenora and brother Bill ‘59.

FIRST THURSDAY AT THE AMIGO SPOT WILL BE OCTOBER THE TOOTH.  It says 6 PM, but the regulars are halfway through dinner by 5:30.

September 19, 2014

IT’S DARK AND — FINALLY — COOLING OFF in Pacific Beach.  Remember last week how I thought we’d stay near the ocean.  I decided it would be cooler to drive to Pine Valley and have breakfast at Major’s Coffee Shop.  We were air conditioned for a couple of hours at least.  I imagine we’ll hit the Waffle Spot tomorrow, now that the Summer visitors have gone.

Last week’s photo of San Diego State brought back a special memory for Bob Richardson ‘61.  You can read it HERE.

Peggy Workman Welch’s query about Dennstedt Village brought an outpouring of memories and some squiggly Google photos from Richard Cone.  Click HERE to check them out.

Doug Kvandal ‘66 says the sketch artist did a great job capturing my likeness — except for the fact that I appear to be smiling.

Jerry Fogel ‘64 would like folks to know that he has a rock band — Takillya -- that does covers of Tom Petty, Van Morrison, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin and Santana.  “You get the picture,” says Jerry.  The photo above shows the band performing at the Chico Club, 7366 El Cajon Blvd.  Jerry says they love to play and don’t charge much.   Click HERE to email him or call him at 619-669-1935 or 619-977-1935  Don’t call him this weekend — he’s at the Class of ‘64 Reunion.

What are YOU doing the rest of the weekend?  Don Anderson ‘64 will be racing his Bobsy-Porsche in Group 7 at the Coronado Speed Festival.  When he’s not on the track he’ll be receiving guests at Paddock Space F-1.  If you miss him there you can catch up with him at the Class of ‘64 Reunion Saturday night.  I’m getting tired just writing about it. Maybe I’ll take a nap.  Click HERE if you want more information on the Coronado Speed Festival.

Hold on to your hats!!  If you graduated in 1965 you’re going to be reminded on a regular basis that it was 50 YEARS AGO!!  The initial Golden Anniversary Pacer dates from September 17, 1964.  Bob Boone and Maria Long were the initial Senior Sketches.  Click HERE to read more!!

Glynn Curry ‘71 passed away September 5th.  He is survived by siblings Phyllis Curry Mann ‘65 and Dennis Curry ‘69.
