How's your Summer going so far?  Here on the West Coast it begins at 8:54 AM.  I can hardly wait.  Hold on -- doesn't that mean the days will be getting shorter?  There's always a catch.

Wikipedia says the San Diego International Airport moved to its current location from the above site on Pacific Highway in 1967.  It also says it was formerly known as Lindbergh Field.  It still says Lindbergh Field if you want to look up flight information.   Click HERE if you'd like to read a lot more about it.

A couple of folks let me know that the Ford in the airport photo was a '59 like the one above, not '57 as I surmised.

I was surprised to learn that the Yellow on Black California license plates existed only from 1963 to 1969, followed by Yellow on Blue.   A couple of classmates recalled going with Mom to get new plates -- at the Bank of America on University!  Click HERE if you'd like to read the complete history of license plates in California.

Members of the Class of ’69 Carol Reardon Grant and Sharon Whitley Larsen celebrated at the RITZ (Rendezvous In the Zoo) fundraising gala last Saturday evening.  Carol's on the committee.  Friends since 7th grade at Lewis Junior High, Carol and Sharon were on the Pacerettes Drill Team and are looking forward to the 50th reunion August 17th at the Bali Hai.  Says Sharon, “It's always fun to see Joan Embery '67 at the RITZ event, entertaining and educating party-goers about various animals as she did with Johnny Carson on his popular TV show”.

Beverley Pope Wagner ’64 passed away from incurable cancer on February 8, 2019.  She was born on August 20, 1946.   She leaves three wonderful daughters, and her loving husband Mike Wagner.  I always enjoyed getting a Happy Birthday call from Bev.  My sister had more friends then anyone I ever knew.   Bev’s daughters loved her dearly also.  They will all miss Beverley.  Bev especially enjoyed Mike.  They were married in 2006.  Every picture with Bev and Mike had them both smiling.   Bev went to Pasadena College (now Point Loma College).  She also went to Moody Bible Institute and Mesa College -- Rolfe Pope ’62

I'm not exactly sure how you're supposed to celebrate Flag Day -- but enjoy!!

Sharon Whitley Larsen and Janet Chelberg Burgess (Colts from the Class of '69) recently had dinner near the London Eye with their respective spouses, Carl and John.  Janet's once again involved in planning the Class of '69's reunion --t he 50th! --on August 17th at the Bali Hai.  (I had to look it up.  That's the London Eye below.  I wonder what they had for dinner -- Bubble and Squeak?)

Here are four '70 classmates at the Lake Elsinore Storm baseball game Tuesday night.  From left, Craig Juleen, Gary Gallerstein, Harry Krewsun and Wayne Zucker.  Game time temperature at 6 PM was 98 degrees, so no sweaters needed for these geezers!  

Remember when the airport was on Pacific Highway?  This photo popped up on Facebook this week and I thought I'd share it.  I'm not sure what year it is.  That looks like a '57 Ford with the trunk lid up.  The VW at the right has one of the old yellow on black license plates.  

I've just learned of the passing of Bill Graham '64 on March 1, 2018 following heart surgery.  Bill went to Majuro, in the Marshall Islands, as a Peace Corps Volunteer in 1969.  In his obituary in the Marshall Islands Journal, it said he “spent over three decades of his life fighting for nuclear testing justice for Marshall Islanders”.  He died on the 64th anniversary of the Bravo hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll.  Click HERE to read the complete obituary.

It may have been tongue-in-cheek, but someone on Facebook wondered what the funny looking pole was in this circa 1972 photo.  Hint:  They were Air Raid Sirens.  Someone said they still use them in the midwest when tornadoes threaten.

They brought in mariachis last Thursday at KUSI for the retirement of Carlos Amezcua '71.  Guess it wasn't a retirement, since he's resurfaced at KTLA in Los Angeles with his old partner Lisa Remillard.  Click HERE if you still want to watch the mariachis.

Remember the College Restaurant, at 6695 El Cajon Blvd.?   This popped up on Facebook this week, taken from The Little Restaurants of San Diego 1974, by Lanny Wagstaff.  It's now the Daily Grind Cafe.

It's that weekend when we spend a little more time than usual remembering those Colts who gave all for our country.  Click HERE to peruse the list.

I think of Ron Davidson in particular on Memorial Day.  He was a friend of mine at College Village Apartments and a coach for some of you at Horace Mann.  He was killed in Vietnam on August 5, 1968.  Click HERE to see the page I devoted to him.  Many, if not most, of you have seen it already, but I always get a kick out of the story posted by Tom Smith.

Ernie Cowan hit close to home this week with his story on San Diego's parrots.  They do frequent my neighborhood in Pacific Beach.  Click HERE to learn a lot.

I've taken a stroll down Memory Lane in order to come up with stuff for this week's Fry Day blog.  I'm revisiting my web page that has two Crawford Identification Cards submitted by Ken Burton '72.  Click HERE to check them out in more detail.

Let's take another look at Ken's grandson and daughter, flanking Coach Draz.  Can you see the family resemblance between Ken's ID card photo and his grandson?

It's been awhile since I came across a cartoon that tickled my funny bone. 

While looking at a WWII draft registration on Ancestry.com, I saw that the young man had been hospitalized at the Vauclain Home.  Some online research led me to TB Sanatariums in San Diego, including Vauclain in Mission Hills, very near the Old County Hospital.   More interesting was a reference to one of the first TB sanatariums, Rest Haven, which eventually became Villa View Hospital, very near Crawford.  Here is just one short paragraph from the Reader 1993 article:  In addition to the boarding houses, two major institutions were accepting tubercular patients in 1920. The oldest was Rest Haven, established in 1913 by the San Diego Society for the Study and Prevention of Tuberculosis. Originally an open -air camp, it evolved by the late 1930s into an elaborate complex including a hospital building (still in use today as Villa View Community Hospital). During World War I, Rest Haven restricted its care to servicemen with TB, but by 1920 it had modified its mission to care for children aged 3 to 12 who were in an anemic condition or who had had contact with TB -- Sharon Sceper Cramer ’68

Everything I have this week I snagged off of Facebook over the last couple of weeks

Ken Burton '72 shared a snapshot of his oldest Grandson, Coach Dick Draz, and Ken's oldest daughter.  I believe the photo was taken at the San Diego CIF Iron Man relays -- named in honor of Coach Draz.

Paula Hildebrand Clare '64 posted three Euclid Elementary class photos featuring her husband -- and my classmate -- Rulon Clare '62.  Click HERE to check them out in a much larger format.

I love photos of the old motels -- or in this case auto camps -- on El Cajon Blvd that date back to when it was Highway 80.  The Tea Garden Auto Camp was at 4646 El Cajon.  I'm not sure what's there now but I'll bet it's Asian -- which makes the Tea Garden name all the better.

I understand that Passover begins this evening and ends on Saturday, April 27.  Enjoy.

The Wingo Women and I will be enjoying Easter Dinner at the Amigo Spot.  Maybe we'll see you there.

At least a couple of Colts are not fast-forwarding certain television commercials.  Bob and Sue Roel Boone can enjoy their son, Yankee's Manager Aaron Boone, on a TD Ameritrade advertisement.

Bethany Hamilton, daughter of Cherilyn Lynch Hamilton '71, is featured in a Jeep Freedom Days commercial.  Bethany lost her arm in a shark attack and was featured in the movie "Soul Surfer".  

Has anyone been involved in sports media longer than Bill Center '63?  He's now part of Padres POV on Fox Sports with Annie Heilbrunn.  The article below appeared in the San Diego Union on October 29, 1960.  Bill must have been a Sophomore.

Emily Adams Byerley '60 passed away April 14, 2019.  I have no additional information.
